So, my son is absolutely obsessed with the Big Hero 6 movie...and I am 100% okay with that. We love that the kids are all getting their education, working together, and loyal. Messages that are not really being used in movies. My son is 5 and he is already talking about going to college so he can obtain the knowledge he needs to make all of his cool inventions he has been drawing up. That, my friends, is a proud mommy moment for me.
We had some friends coming into town to go to Disneyland shortly after the movie came out so I thought it was a great time to do a Baymax outfit for him and his friend. I really went back and forth about which Baymax I should make, the health care non threatening design Baymax or super hero Baymax. My son is much more drawn to the non super hero Baymax which surprises me a lot, our life is super hero's and taekwondo. Don't get me wrong he likes super hero Baymax, but not nearly as much as the regular Baymax. Plus, regular Baymax is a lot simpler to achieve.
We ran to the craft store and bought plain white shirts, white baseball caps, and black apparel paint, I had the rest of the supplies at my house already. My supplies consisted of white apparel paint, a stiff brush(orange handle), a basic paint brush(red handle), a round sponge brush(wood handle), a small canning jar lid, and a pencil.

I started with the hat because when you make the shirt you need gray paint so it makes sense to start by using the black paint. To figure out where to put the eyes I had my son place the hat on his head so I can see where it would make sense to put the eyes. Once you find the right spot place a tick mark where the middle the circle should be with a pencil. Then do the same to the other side of the hat for the second eye. Place your sponge brush into the paint and dab it a couple of times on the plate before placing it on the hat (pictured below). I centered my brush as much as I could over the tick mark I created and lightly placed the brush on the hat. Once you set the brush on the hat, press down firmly and then without lifting the brush off the hat pulse the brush a couple of times to make sure the circle was completely filled in. Then you repeat that for the second eye. Now that you have both eyes, draw a line lightly with a pencil that connected the eyes. The trick with making it look awesome is drawing the line slightly lower than the center of the circles and bending the line slightly into a smile shape. You will want to do this because the hat is rounded if you go straight across it will look like Baymax is frowning.
Now that you have the line drawn, use your stiff brush to create the line. Instead of using a brushing motion, add paint to the tip of the brush and just press it firmly onto the hat. Once you have the line established all the way across go back in and filled in spaces where it is needed.
That completes the hat, see super easy!
Now to start the shirt you need to create a gray for Baymax's access port. I used white apparel paint that I had left over from my Jack Skellington shirt tutorial. You really want to make a light gray because on Baymax it is not meant to stand out. Once you have the color you want, lay out the shirt and start trying different placements of the canning jar lid. You want it to be on the right side of the shirt in the upper chest area. Once you are happy with where the circle would be located take your stiff brush and started to gently tap paint onto the shirt using the inner circle on the jar lid. The circle will not be perfect, but that's ok. Just go in with your regular paint brush and make the line thicker to encompass all the mistake 'bumps'.

Now that you have the circle it is time to make inside lines. Using your stiff brush dab a line on the inside of each side slightly below the center of the circle (shown below). You will want to make that line thicker to match the look of the circles line.
Now you want to make and angled line on each line towards the center. You don't want it to be too long because then it stops looking like Baymax's and make sure they are the same length/diagonal. Once you have those lines you can now connect them across the top (pictured below).
Now you are done, just make sure your lines are all the same thickness. Super simple!
Of all the outfits I have made, this one received the most complements while we were in the park. The boys looked so cute and we even did the meet and greet with Baymax and Hiro that day. It was such a special moment for my son. Here they are waiting in line to meet Baymax and Hiro.
